A Thought to Carry with You
To keep going on a road of peacemaking, sometimes we have to take the long view -- a sweeping perspective that is indivisible from each thoughtful action we take in this moment and the next. Gary Snyder puts it movingly in this excerpt from "For the Children" in Turtle Island:
In the next century
or the one beyond that,
they say,
are valleys, pastures,
we can meet there in peace
if we make it.
To climb these coming crests
one word to you, to
you and your children:
stay together
learn the flowers
go light
In the next century? That sounds achingly long, and yet anyone who has lived for a few decades begins to understand that
life-affirming change usually
happens slowly. A faithful person carries an acorn in her pocket on a long pilgrimage and plants it in a new land where her children's children will watch it grow into an oak.
There are valleys and pastures in a future lovingly envisioned, Snyder assures us: places of refuge and fertility. We can meet there in peace -- and then the poignant part: if we make it. And what is our best hope of making it? Staying together. Studying Nature in her resilient beauty. Going "light" in its double sense: unburdened and also bathed in the bright pulse of Being.
